The Northeastern Illinois University Distinguished Alumni Award was presented to Luis Gutierrez (B.A. '76 English), U.S. Congressman, Fourth Legislative District, Illinois, by NEIU President Sharon Hahs and Suleyma Perez, director, government relations, in Washington, D.C., in April.
This award is given to an individual who has exhibited excellence in the field of business, education and/or community service and whose contributions have had a profound and lasting effect on society at-large.
Gutierrez was the first Latino in the Midwest to be elected to Congress. He has served eight terms in the U.S. House and has worked to address the needs of the immigrant community in his district. Due to his outstanding work, he was appointed chair of the Democratic Caucus Immigration Task Force and is the party's lead strategist and spokesperson on immigration issues. He is also the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Immigration Task Force.
Additionally, Gutierrez has worked to improve the lives and protect the rights of veterans, military personnel and minority groups. After graduating from NEIU, Gutierrez worked as a teacher, social worker, community activist, and city official. In 1986, he was elected Alderman for the 26th Ward of Chicago. While in the Chicago City Council, Gutierrez fought for affordable housing, tougher ethics rules and a law to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation.
"Congressman Gutierrez epitomizes the word 'distinguished' with an outstanding record as a leader, both locally and nationally," said Carla Knorowski, vice president for institutional advancement, and executive director, NEIU Foundation. "His commitment and dedication to serving people and making our communities better places in which to live and work is inspiring. Through his example he teaches all of us how to live more meaningful and fulfilling lives. We are proud to call him an alumnus of NEIU – one who continues to add to and enrich the traditions of excellence and history of our University."
